Empathy workshop

An activity for high school that would help promote empathy and caring involves a collaborative “Empathy Board.” Students and staff members would use this board to anonymously write down their feelings, share personal experiences, or articulate challenges they are facing. There will be clear guidelines on what respectful and constructive writing looks like, along with adults moderating the content, to ensure a safe and supportive environment. Throughout the school day or a class period, individuals can jot down their thoughts and use the board as an outlet to alleviate their stress. The anonymity helps ensure that community members feel safe and secure in expressing themselves honestly without fear of judgment.

After a set amount of time, the teacher would collect the entries and make a graph or word cloud illustrating the varied responses as well as the common themes. This data would then be presented and discussed with the students to highlight the diversity of emotions in the group. The goal is to demonstrate that people are not alone in their struggles and that others may share similar feelings or have overcome comparable challenges.

Afterward, there could be follow-up activities to reinforce the lesson. These activities could be small group reflection sessions or empathy workshops, where students collaborate to make their dramatic skits inspired by the posts they found most impactful. After creating and performing their skits, peer groups could discuss them, critically examining the situations and articulating what it looks like to practice effective empathy.

By participating in these activities, students would gain insight into their peers’ emotional lives and be less judgmental and more understanding of the many issues and emotions we all struggle with beneath the surface.
